Danube River Restoration Events and Stakeholder Activities

Stay informed about key DANUBElifelines events—including international conferences, stakeholder workshops, site visits, and community activities. Our events bring together scientists, river managers, local authorities, and civil society to exchange knowledge and shape the future of river restoration across the Danube Basin.

Upcoming Events

How can knowledge and experience from different Danube restoration projects better support implementation across the river basin?

The Danube Lighthouse Cluster Workshop, organised by DANUBElifelines together with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), will bring together ICPDR experts and teams from projects working on river connectivity and restoration across the Danube Basin.

Participants will explore what different projects have learned in practice, where their findings and approaches reinforce each other, and how this knowledge can contribute to implementation at basin-wide level. The workshop is designed around exchange rather than presentations.

First we will start with an overview of the Danube Lighthouse project landscape, followed by an exchange on scientific knowledge across projects. Representatives of DANUBElifelines, SWIM, DANUBE4all, LIFE-Boat 4 Sturgeon, MONSTUR, DANSER, Restore4Life and other participating initiatives will share experiences related to data generation and integration, monitoring methods, habitat restoration and stakeholder engagement.

A dedicated “What we wish we had known earlier” session will focus on practical lessons from stakeholder engagement, data harmonisation, coordination and implementation. The discussion will then turn to how project results can support basin-wide implementation and which joint activities, knowledge products and policy contributions could strengthen continued cooperation among the projects and ICPDR.

Participation is by invitation.

Paddelboot on River from top view.

Join us for a two-day rafting experience along the lower Ipeľ River – one of the DANUBElifelines demonstration areas, where the impacts of river fragmentation on migratory fish are being studied. This field-based activity is organized by WWF Slovakia on the occasion of World Fish Migration Day and offers a unique opportunity to experience a near-natural river section while gaining insights into river connectivity, barriers, and restoration challenges in practice.

On Saturday evening, participants will gather in Pastovce for an informal discussion session focused on free-flowing rivers, river restoration, and the importance of connectivity for freshwater ecosystems. The session will be led by a WWF Slovakia Fresh Water expert Martina Paulíková

Important note:
This event is organized with limited capacity, and participation is subject to confirmation.

Q&A session

To mark World Fish Migration Day, WWF Romania is organizing an international conference dedicated to migratory fish and river ecosystems. The event will take place in a hybrid format at the Conference Hall of the Natural Sciences Museum Complex “Răsvan Angheluță” in Galați.

The conference will bring together international experts and stakeholders to share knowledge and perspectives on migratory fish species, their habitats, and the challenges they face in fragmented river systems. The DANUBElifelines project will also be part of the event with its objectives reflected within the programme context.

The final agenda and list of speakers are currently being confirmed and will be shared once available.

As part of World Fish Migration Day, WWF Romania is organizing interactive educational activities for children in Sfântu Gheorghe, inviting them to discover the world of sturgeons through engaging, age-adapted formats.

For younger children (ages 4–6), the activity “Be a Sturgeon!” introduces the life of sturgeons in the Danube through storytelling, movement games, and creative drawing. Children will follow the journey of a sturgeon, navigate a symbolic “river” with obstacles, and create their own sturgeon through art.

For older participants (ages 8–15), the “Sturgeon Detectives” activity focuses on migration, river ecosystems, and critical thinking. Through interactive presentations, teamwork exercises, and “real or fake” image analysis, participants will explore how sturgeons live and how digital content can shape our understanding of nature. The session also includes a creative component where children imagine and design a “sturgeon of the future.”

Wetlands International Europe is organising a walk along an often-forgotten stream, the Molenbeek, to celebrate World Fish Migration Day and Walking Rivers Day. This walk, organised in partnership with the Brussels-based NGO Coordination Senne, will allow us to celebrate rivers and the efforts made by local communities to protect and restore them, for biodiversity and people, from migratory fish to future generations.

It is free, open to the public and will be guided in French and Dutch. Let's show the world that Brusseleirs, despite the channelisation of their rivers, will always remember that they are river people, and are mobilised to support waterways restoration to reenable fish migration in regional freshwaters.

A two-day expert workshop bringing together fish specialists from across Europe to support the conservation of Danube fish species.

Workshop objective:

The workshop aims to assess the IUCN Red List–type conservation status of 22 Danube fish species, explore habitat and threat dynamics, and prioritize recovery actions to inform future conservation planning.

 Key outputs will include:

  • Habitat requirements for each species and life stage

  • Conservation status assessments by country/region, including uncertainty related to data quality

  • Quantification of key threats

  • Identification of drivers of conservation (FCM)

  • Evaluation of potential recovery solutions to inform a conservation blueprint

In 2026, a series of regional workshops will be held across different river basins in Slovenia, aimed at engaging key stakeholders in the preparation of a national strategy for the conservation of the huchen and its habitats. These workshops represent the first step in an inclusive process that seeks to connect local knowledge, scientific expertise, and practical experience.

The huchen is one of the largest species in the salmonid family and at the same time one of the most endangered freshwater fish species in Europe. Its presence is closely linked to well-preserved and connected river habitats. Therefore, conserving the huchen also represents an opportunity for a holistic improvement of river ecosystems, increased biodiversity, and greater resilience of aquatic ecosystems to climate change.

During the workshops, we will jointly identify local challenges, threats, and good practices, and develop starting points for the next phases of the strategy preparation. The process invites representatives of municipalities and state institutions, water managers, experts, angling and nature conservation organizations, as well as all those whose work and decisions help shape the future of Slovenian rivers.

The workshops will be conducted in a targeted manner, by river basin:

  • 3 March 2026 at 5:00 PM – Maribor – Cesta XIV. divizije 54, 2000 Maribor
    (Mura and Drava river basins)

  • 6 March 2026 at 6:00 PM – Škofja Loka – Studenec 9, 4220 Škofja Loka
    (Sora river basin)

  • 10 March 2026 at 6:00 PM – Ljubljana – Hladnikova cesta 11, 1000 Ljubljana
    (Middle Sava river basin)

  • 12 March 2026 at 5:00 PM – Hrastnik – Podkraj 71A, Podkraj, 1430 Hrastnik

Overview

The KoM aims to align all Work Packages (WPs) on project goals, roles, and processes. It also initiates cross-WP collaboration and detailed planning, while addressing the needs for clarity on roles, effort, cross-WP coordination, demo site integration, and project procedures. Key overarching themes, such as data management and stakeholder engagement, should also be introduced.

Project DANUBElifelines: Safeguarding Migratory Fish and their Habitats in the Danube River Basin and beyond has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101213836.
