DANUBElifelines is built on seven pillars that drive real change. From science to solidarity – each one strengthens fish migration and river health. Dive in and discover how we reconnect the Danube, step by step.
Explore the 7 Pillars of Progress
Project Management
Coordinating the Project from Start to Finish
Lead: BOKU University
We ensure the smooth operation of the entire project. This includes overseeing partner coordination, finances, reporting to the EU, managing risks, and organising key project meetings. WP1 also leads the selection and support of Associated Regions to ensure wider reach and replication.
Locating the Problem
Targeting Where River Restoration Matters Most or Finding the Right Places to Restore Rivers First
Lead: Deltares / Swansea University
To protect migratory fish, we must first understand where help is needed most. We map the current conditions of rivers, barriers, and fish populations across the basin. We analyse data to identify where restoration efforts will have the biggest impact, creating a roadmap for future actions.
Demonstration Sites
From Theory to Practice
Lead: University of Duisburg-Essen
The 8 DANUBElifelines demosites are real-life examples of river stretches where restoration is needed. We gather data and suggest solutions. These real-world case studies help us learn what works best—so we can share these lessons across the region and beyond.
Working with People
Collaborating with Local Communities and River Users
Lead: Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries
Restoration requires collaboration. We bring together public authorities, businesses, and civil society to build trust and create joint solutions. Through interviews, trainings, and communication tools, we aim to close gaps between sectors and inspire action for river and fish protection.
Supporting the Business
Making River Protection Work for Local Economies
Lead: University of Dunărea de Jos Galați
Why should businesses help restore rivers? We work with entrepreneurs and companies to develop sustainable, fish-friendly business models. From tourism to fisheries, we explore how protecting rivers can create economic opportunities and benefit communities across the basin.
Becoming a Guideline
Sharing Knowledge and Working Solutions with Other Regions
Lead: BOKU University
Good ideas should travel. We gather project learnings and turn them into practical tools and action plans that can be used across Europe. We focus on replicating successful solutions in Associated Regions and making our data widely accessible.
Spread the Word
Raising Awareness Among the Public and Professionals
Lead: WWF Slovakia
Like the Danube affects Europe, we aim to affect minds. We want the whole basin to know about our work—and why it matters. We use online and offline tools to raise awareness among the public and professionals. To inform, inspire and motivate—all to give better future to the Danube’s fish, landscape, and people.
